Can’t Win if you Don’t Play

Jack Butala: Can’t Win if you Don’t Play. Every Single month we give away a property for free. It’s super simple to qualify. Two simple steps. Leave us your feedback for this podcast on iTunes and number two, get the free ebook at landacademy.com, you don’t even have to read it. Thanks for listening.

Jack Butala:
Steven Jack Butala for Land Academy. Welcome to our Cash Flow From Land show. We show you how to buy property for half of what its worth and resell it the next day. Great information and instruction from Jack, that’s me.

Jill DeWit:
Inspiration from Jill, that’s me.

Jack Butala:
In this episode, Jill and I talk about why you can’t win if you don’t play. Hey, it sounds like a lottery slogan but it’s way more than that. It sounds simple but it’s really, really true. Jill, great show today. Before we start, let’s take a question posted by one of our members on successplant.com, our free online community.

Jill DeWit:
Okay. Roy from Tulsa asks, “I’m working on a business plan for this land business and I have a question I want to pose to you. What are three keys to long term survivability and profitability in this business?” I love it. He’s even goes on to say, “I’m thinking marketing, buyer’s list, systems.” What are your thoughts?

Jack Butala:
First of all, it’s a fantastic question. I can tell by people who are new to this. The questions that they asked, it’s going to work. This is one of those questions. He is planning and he’s asking some people that have done it, “What are the key things that you need?” I’ll answer him. Number one is access to world class data, which we provide through data to doorstep. You’re at an unfair advantage, which is really the topic of our next show.

That is an unfair advantage and we provide it for all of our members. Access to world class data, you’re right on with systems. In fact, I’ve been in this for since the 90’s and Jill and I still improve our systems all the time. We still change ways to make the things better based on what our customers are asking us. All of the sudden sometimes you get three questions that are really similar from three different people and that tells you that you are either doing something right or wrong, or you need to change the systems.

Systems data and how to use the data. Man, if I could have found a great printer like an industry specific printer. A lot of years ago, what a lot of headaches I would have saved. Data, a bulk mail printer that’s industry specific, and systems. You can’t win if you don’t play. Whatever you’re trying to accomplish, it’s not going to happen without any action.

You can’t win a baseball game by sitting on the sidelines. You’ve got to get in there and play. You have to get a plan, get educated, put a plan in place and execute. This topic comes up with dating. Have you ever heard somebody saying, “Man, all the good guys are gone. They’re all married. All, I can’t meet the woman that I really think I deserve.” You know why that’s happening, Jill?

Jill DeWit:
Why?

Jack Butala:
Are you with us today?

Jill DeWit:
I am. Everybody’s with you now. Everybody wants to know that.

Jack Butala:
Because you’re not trying hard enough. You’re not putting a plan in place. You’re not going to the right places. If you love art go try to meet your man in an art museum. If you are a vegetarian don’t hang on at the meat counter.

Jill DeWit:
You still could meet a good person but you may not be happy because you’re doing it wrong. You’re there for the wrong reasons. That’s what I find. You’re right, you’ve got to get out there and do it. Do it right and do what is important to you.

Jack Butala:
If you like to dress up like a hooker and drink too much, that’s the man you’re going to end up with a guy who likes that kind of thing.

Jill DeWit:
Oh, no. Oh, my gosh. I am trying to think, what message when you met me years ago? I would like to … What message was I conveying to you?

Jack Butala:
You know what Jill asks me? Jill asks me a lot it’s like, “Is this too low cut? Can you see through this?” You have a whole thing about …

Jill DeWit:
I do.

Jack Butala:
… being too voluptuous and exposed in that area. You never not. You really never are like …

Jill DeWit:
Because I pay attention, I want to be classy. I think it’s important for a woman to be classy. What?

Jack Butala:
I don’t think you could not be classy if you tried love.

Jill DeWit:
Thank you. It’s …

Jack Butala:
My point here is get in the game and play. There’s a ton of people in the success plan. Way, way, way more than any that have ever made the decision to get involved financially. Also, I’m not sure they’re sitting on the sidelines. That’s worse than not getting in there at all. Not even knowing about it or thinking about it. It’s just like torture. All the time, I was playing sports when I was a kid. It’s like, “Man, come on. Put me in, put me in, put me in.”

Jill DeWit:
Right. You’re saying that’s worst?

Jack Butala:
Yeah.

Jill DeWit:
Yeah, I agree. If you know about it and you can’t do it, but you can.

Jack Butala:
I’d rather not be on the team then sit on the bench.

Jill DeWit:
Yes. I like that. That’s really good. Thank you.

Jack Butala:
This is the portion of the if, then segment of our show. If you do X then Y will happen. If you want to make a living as a real estate investor, then surround yourself with people who have already accomplished it like us. Educate yourself and get on that path, get in the game. If not, relinquish your username at successplant.com.

Jill DeWit:
That’s good. It sounds it is easy. A lot of people don’t do it for some reason that you … Whatever it is you got to surround yourself with those people. Say you want to be an actor.

Jack Butala:
You’re right.

Jill DeWit:
You got to put it out there too. Whatever you want and let people know what you’re trying to do. “Hey, I’m really working on growing my acting career. Get out and meet some people.” Like we met that guy a couple weeks ago. You remember that?

Jack Butala:
Yeah.

Jill DeWit:
We all knew he wanted to be an actor. He was actually really, really funny good guy. I think that guy is going to succeed.

Jack Butala:
I do too.

Jill DeWit:
He was doing it right. He was putting it out there and asking people questions. What was really interesting was he was surrounding himself with not necessarily people who are in acting, because that’s not us. He was clearly surrounding himself with successful people.

Jack Butala:
He’s in the right town.

Jill DeWit:
Right, and asking successful people, i.e. you, really good questions about being successful.

Jack Butala:
He want, just like the question today. I can tell just by that question. It’s the same thing with this kid that you can tell that they’re looking at it the right way.

Jill DeWit:
Oh, yeah.

Jack Butala:
Here’s a wrong way to ask a question, “How do you make a lot of money? How did you get to quit your job at that age?” Those are pie in the sky. “How do you be a real estate investor?” That those aren’t, that’s not. You haven’t made a decision yet. “What’s the secret?” Those are all not the right questions. We don’t get too many silly questions like that. You know where I see those kinds of questions? From people who are out there, maybe they’re our competitors maybe they’re not. I’m not going to mention any names that are saying, “Here’s the secret.” There’s no secret, there’s no secret.

Jill DeWit:
It’s true.

Jack Butala:
Get some world class data. Get yourself a great printer. Get involved in group of people like us or whoever your group is and take action. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Stop listening to the people that are stopping you in your new life from accomplishing something and don’t dress like a hooker.

Jill DeWit:
Oh, my gosh. I never know what’s going to come out. Oh, Wow. What’s great is you tone it down for the show.

Jack Butala:
I know. Can you imagine? Which is for one day we should have microphones on around the office.

Jill DeWit:
Oh, my goodness.

Jack Butala:
It would end both of our careers.

Jill DeWit:
Steven, you and I were walking down the street in those day thinking, “Can you imagine if someone was pointing one of those, what are those mics that you could pick up sounds from? Have it far away like …

Jack Butala:
Yeah, and you have to kind of dish on it.

Jill DeWit:
Yeah, like they’re pointing it like if anybody could hear what we’re sharing right now. It’s stuff that you … I mean you should share it with your most trusted person. It’s stuff you’re like, “I can only say this to you,” but some of the stuff you come up with, wow.

Jack Butala:
When Bill Clinton was president I saw this news clip, I’ll never forget it. They just exactly what you described. They caught him talking to a camera guy. He had no idea that anybody was recording anything, audio and video. He is just ripping this guy up and down, “I thought I told you.” I never heard him speak that way, in that tone of voice because he’s a politician.

Jill DeWit:
Oh, that’s awesome.

Jack Butala:
He’s a politician, so everything’s all well, it’s well presented and he’s soften in the middle. Politicians are always trying to be in the middle. Man, it was just refreshing. I’m not pro-Clinton or against Clinton. I’m really not and I don’t even want to talk about politics ever. I’m just saying, “He just happened to be that president.”

Jill DeWit:
That’s hilarious.

Jack Butala:
I loved it.

Jill DeWit:
We all love it too when you realize that someone is just a real person. We all make mistakes, there’s going to be things.

Jack Butala:
There’s acceptable mistakes, Jill. Then there’s some character stuff that you shouldn’t do that. For some reason politicians and adultery go together.

Jill DeWit:
Why is that?

Jack Butala:
I think that’s a character problem. That’s not a mistake. There’s a real deep problem. If you make a bad decision as a politician like, “Man, we should never built that bridge.” I understand that. That’s an honest mistake but like scandalous stuff, that’s not cool. You’re hurting people, man. Come on.

Jill DeWit:
Why did we go on this topic?

Jack Butala:
I don’t know.

Jill DeWit:
It’s back to the hooker thing?

Jack Butala:
Get off the sideline, man. Get off the sideline, get in the game. What do you have to lose? Maybe that’s it, maybe that’s why people aren’t doing it. They’re afraid.

Jill DeWit:
Yeah, maybe.

Jack Butala:
I can’t count the number of people that … Remember, Jill in the beginning of Land Academy they would call and say, “I need to know this is real. I need to know this real.” Now, all those people are killing it and they’re doing deals and we don’t even talk to them anymore.

Jill DeWit:
That is funny. You know …

Jack Butala:
They used us the way we are intended to be used and then moved on.

Jill DeWit:
I look at it like some of the most … We call them, you say skeptical but they’re not. They’re just asking a lot of questions because they’re really serious about it.

Jack Butala:
They should be skeptical. I would be, I am.

Jill DeWit:
It’s not that they’re skeptical, they just want to know all the answers, I don’t think you call it skeptical. I call it questioning. I call it having needing more knowledge. Whatever you want to call it. Boy, they seem to be the ones that really take this the most seriously and really do very well.

Jack Butala:
Here’s all the secrets and all the advice and all the stuff wrapped up into one sentence about just making a whole lifelong prosperous career in real estate investment. Direct mail offers with world class data. If you don’t know how to use to it that those two tools, if we just what we teach, you’re going to kill it.

Jill DeWit:
Is it my turn now? Am I call?

Jack Butala:
Yes, that’s correct. If you have a question and you want to be on the show, call 800-725-8816. Jill, inspire us.

Jill DeWit:
My inspiration for today is anything you wish think about this. Is there anything that you wish that you would have pursued way back when? Once you figure out what that is, why aren’t you doing it now?

Jack Butala:
Are you asking me?

Jill DeWit:
I’m asking whoever is listening. That right now would be you.

Jack Butala:
Me and two other people. Oh, we’re not supposed to say that anymore.

Jill DeWit:
No.

Jack Butala:
We used to say, “Are you the six listeners?” That our producer said, “Stop it, cause there’s way more than six now.”

Jill DeWit:
Exactly.

Jack Butala:
Yes, I wish I will have … and I mean all the way back to my teen years. If you’re really young listening to this please brand your name or brand something about yourself that is going to stick with you for the rest of your life. Not a slogan or something but your name. Something that’s never going to change like the last name, Trump or Sting or Madonna or if you’re Jack Johnson. You can brand that. I wish I would have done that a long time ago because whatever you choose to do for a living, you’re going to be thirty times more successful at it. If you’re branding your name out in social media and all that.

Jill DeWit:
Let me tweak this a little bit. Give me something you wish you would have pursued.

Jack Butala:
Like a career?

Jill DeWit:
Uh-huh (Affirmative).

Jack Butala:
I’m really happy with the career choices I made, Jill. I know that’s really boring and a boring answer, but …

Jill DeWit:
Do you know what I wish?

Jack Butala:
I would have written. I think I could have pulled it off as a full time writer, but then I wouldn’t be doing this. No, go ahead. I’d rather hear what yours is.

Jill DeWit:
No, I like your writing thing. You wish you would have pursued writing?

Jack Butala:
Yeah, and I’ve been doing it now. It’s for a long time, so it’s fine.

Jill DeWit:
There you go. Why not now? The answer is you are doing it.

Jack Butala:
Yeah.

Jill DeWit:
Now, you are. Here’s mine. Years ago, I want to be a musician. Got myself a seriously, Yamaha DX7.

Jack Butala:
I never knew this. I honestly never knew this about you.

Jill DeWit:
Holly, my roommate also had a keyboard and then we got … we called it’s electronic drum. What did we call it then?

Jack Butala:
A drum machine?

Jill DeWit:
Yes. Oh, it’s hilarious too because it had the clap noises. We had so much fun with that thing. We called it a drummer in a box. We had a band name, we had our logo. We were …

Jack Butala:
What’s the band’s name? How can we have never talked about this before.

Jill DeWit:
Here’s what’s great, is my roommate went so far as having the name tattooed on her arm.

Jack Butala:
Oh, no.

Jill DeWit:
I’m not kidding. We were in, man. I was old enough but I wasn’t allowed to have a tattoo, so I didn’t get to do that. How funny is that? Mom and Dad said, “No,” so I couldn’t but she did. Our care band name is called When in Doubt.

Jack Butala:
I like it. I thought it was going to be really silly.

Jill DeWit:
Thank you.

Jack Butala:
No, When in Doubt. I like it, man.

Jill DeWit:
I had so much fun. I can’t sing.

Jack Butala:
No, you can’t.

Jill DeWit:
Oh, my God. To save my life but I would play the keyboard and I’d do the drum machine and coordinate stuff and then I’d write lyrics. We just didn’t that. She couldn’t really sing either, so we’re obviously lacking a lot of pieces.

Jack Butala:
Was it awful?

Jill DeWit:
Depends on …

Jack Butala:
It was awful.

Jill DeWit:
I’m sure it was awful. I have some recordings of stuff that we did somewhere.

Jack Butala:
I got them the stuff.

Jill DeWit:
I’m totally serious in a dig.

Jack Butala:
I would have used this as blackmail material years ago. Had I known this?

Jill DeWit:
Yeah, thanks. Yeah, you didn’t know but my little inspiration here actually just brought up something in me that I forgot about. That was one thing that would have been fun back then. For you listening, what’s yours? If you have something like that and it’s still not too late. I just might go get a keyboard.

Jack Butala:
It’s classic.

Jill DeWit:
Jack, watch out.

Jack Butala:
Classic stuff.

Jill DeWit:
Thank you.

Jack Butala:
Join us in another episode where Jack and Jill discuss how to use information, that’s me.

Jill DeWit:
Inspiration, that’s me.

Jack Butala:
To get just about anything you want. We use it every day to buy property for half and sell it from way more immediately. Good show, Jill.

Jill DeWit:
That was fun.

Jack Butala:
Cracking me up about that band thing. It’s awesome, right, I mean it. I can’t wait to hear the tapes.

Jill DeWit:
When I say digging it, I do some digging, I’m not …

Jack Butala:
Was it like alternative music, like Depeche Mode?

Jill DeWit:
Totally. Oh, it was all technical. It was all electronic. It was fun.

Jack Butala:
You answers all the questions about why you like yes and all that.

Jill DeWit:
Yes.

Jack Butala:
It makes total sense now.

Jill DeWit:
Now you know why I used to study all those magazines and I would go to some of those shows. I don’t think I ever shared this, but I went to some … I can’t remember what they were called back then. It’s music, it was all electronic music and they would introduce new products and things like that. I’ve learned all about different old keyboards and old systems. They’re called it Moogs, I think.

Jack Butala:
Yeah, the Moog.

Jill DeWit:
Yeah, I would get all into that. Then, I even took some sound recording classes at …

Jack Butala:
I love that stuff.

Jill DeWit:
… college and that was fun.

Jack Butala:
This podcast is my excuse to buy toys and the horse around with that kind of stuff.

Jill DeWit:
Yeah, there you go. You’re right. Now, we have all the equipment I just can’t sing.

Jack Butala:
That’s not fixable.

Jill DeWit:
No, you can’t fix that. That’s hilarious.

Jack Butala:
Hey, you can’t win if you don’t play, right?

Jill DeWit:
That’s right.

Jack Butala:
Let’s go buy something for half price today and resell it. Jack and Jill, information and inspiration.
