Jack Butala:                   Jack Butala here for Land Academy. Welcome to our Cash Flow From Land show. In this episode, Jill and I talk about 2 consulting crooks we met last night at dinner.

Jill DeWit:                            Oh my gosh.

Jack Butala:                   Jill, I wonder if you and I differ on this topic a little bit. We’re going to find out. Let’s chat about it in a second here.

Before we do, let’s take a question from a caller, please.

Jill DeWit:                            Cool! All right.

Frank from New Jersey called in and asks, “Why should I believe you guys? Why give up the secrets of real estate?”

Ooh, that’s a good question.

Jack Butala:                   What’s he getting at here?-

Jill DeWit:                            I like that.-

Jack Butala:                   … You guys are so successful, why you … why don’t you just shut up and-

Jill DeWit:                            … I know, this can’t be real.-

Jack Butala:                   Yeah, it’s the same old story.-

Jill DeWit:                            … Nobody does this. No one can buy it that cheap.-

Jack Butala:                   … I’m tired of answering this.-

Jill DeWit:                            … Sell it for 3 times as much.

Jack Butala:                   … You answer it this time. I’m-

Jill DeWit:                            No, no-

Jack Butala:                   … I’m tired of answering it.

Jill DeWit:                            Come on. Do it with me.

Jack Butala:                   Hey Frank, from New Jersey, go to Success Plant dot com, which is our open forum. I created it myself. To find out if it’s real. It’s packed with people answering each other’s questions and just talking about the deals that they are doing and implementing our whole program.

To answer why, why are we doing this, Jill?

Jill DeWit:                            Because we’re done financially and we like this?

Jack Butala:                   I love having this talk show, that’s one of the reasons.

Jill DeWit:                            It’s fun!

Jack Butala:                   Here’s a secret, Land Academy, we’re not giving it away.

Jill DeWit:                            No.

Jack Butala:                   This turns out to be a nice little profit center for us.

Jill DeWit:                            It’s true.

Jack Butala:                   The truth is this, we do more real estate deals because of Land Academy then without it. Actually by leaps and bounds. Everybody wins here.

Jill DeWit:                            I personally get more of a kick now out of teaching someone to do a deal then doing it myself. You know what I mean? When I’ve successfully coached, we’ve taught someone how to do it and they’re coming back like, “Oh my gosh it works. I just bought it for $500 and I sold it for $2000.” They’re jumping up and down. I’m like, “See”. That makes my heart feel good. I live for that stuff.

Jack Butala:                   Some of our most skeptical students, right in the beginning, the one’s who have the toughest time digesting this end up being the most successful.

Jill DeWit:                            I agree.

Jack Butala:                   I think it’s … You know … Yeah, you should ask yourself these questions. Why … What’s the catch? You should ask yourself that question on anything.

Jill DeWit:                            It’s true.

Jack Butala:                   You know, who the heck are these guys? That kind of thing.

I’m glad you’re asking that question. I hope we answered it.

Jill DeWit:                            You what the nice thing is, unlike other businesses … What other business can you think of that you could go and see their track record before you, you know, whatever?

Jack Butala:                   Right.

Jill DeWit:                            It’s kind of funny. We are unique that way-

Jack Butala:                   We’ve done 15-

Jill DeWit:                            … That you can.-

Jack Butala:                   … Almost 16,000 deals and that wasn’t on accident.

Jill DeWit:                            That’s true.

Jack Butala:                   He’s from New Jersey. I can speak real straight.

Jill DeWit:                            I love it. I love it.

All right, let’s get to the show because this is really funny.

Jack Butala:                   Jill and I went out to dinner last night to a really nice restaurant on Scottsdale Rd, in Old Town. Here in Arizona; Scottsdale, Arizona. We met 2 people who were not from here. I don’t remember where they’re from. Let’s just say Pennsylvania because I think that’s actually where they were from, 2 guys.

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah, I don’t remember where they were from. I want to say Colorado but I don’t know.

Jack Butala:                   We got to talking to them because we were in the community area, community table area, with these guys.

Jill DeWit:                            Having drinks-

Jack Butala:                   Yeah, having fun.

Jill DeWit:                            … Laughing. It wasn’t our first drink.-

Jack Butala:                   It wasn’t theirs.

Jill DeWit:                            We’re all laughing.

Jack Butala:                   Probably wasn’t our last that night. We all got to talk about, kind of talking about, what we do for a living. In the end, what these guys do … Here’s my big question to you, Jill.

Jill DeWit:                            This is funny.

Jack Butala:                   These guys are IT consultants. Is that right?

Jill DeWit:                            I didn’t get this until the very end. You told me that they’re crooks. I’m like, “What?”

Jack Butala:                   Well, maybe they’re not. Let’s talk about it.

Jill DeWit:                            Okay.

Jack Butala:                   They’re IT consultants, but, they’re extremely seasoned at what they do. They were very open about the fact that what they do is extremely easy for them and they can basically, as a consultant, knock out a project in a couple of days. But they stretch it out. They stretch it out for months sometimes.

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah.

Jack Butala:                   Here’s … That’s my question. You know, are they crooks? Are they … Should they be rewarded for that because they’re so good at it? Where’s the line?

Jill DeWit:                            I-

Jack Butala:                   We give advice about stuff like this. We, you know … I don’t think we take advantage of anyone. Not in land Academy-

Jill DeWit:                            No.

Jack Butala:                   … Land Stay or the whole thing.

Jill DeWit:                            You know what’s funny? If anything, we air on the opposite. We give it away.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            They’re like “Should I give you” … You know, they’re like, “What do you mean? Why are you telling me all this?” I don’t know, you asked!

We don’t hold it back. That’s the difference. I’m a fan of getting paid appropriately for what you bring to the table. Don’t be sneaky about it. I would rather them tell me, “Look, I can do this in a week.” You know, if there’s … Maybe there’s a way you can be honest about this. “You’re paying for my expertise. I’m the number 1 person who knows how to do this. Here’s what I charge and here’s why. You can pay me $2000 to say whatever this is and I can have it to you in a week. You can hire that guy. It’s going to take him a month and it’s going to cost the same money. Do you really want to do that?”

Jack Butala:                   That’s right.

Jill DeWit:                            I’d be saying, “No, I want it now. I get it that you’re worth it. You can do it that fast. I’m happy to pay for it.”

Jack Butala:                   Right.

Jill DeWit:                            That’s my only thing. It sounds like I didn’t get it until you shared it with me later. Sounds like that’s … They don’t even have that in their head. That’s not the way they do things.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah, I think there’s different parts of the country and different ways of attitudes about how to get things done. Whether or not providing a good service or not.

I’ve met a lot of people in business I can … That’s one of the nice things about Land Academy too. I meet new people every day who are trying to accomp… Make a good share of money and do it … The vast majority do it properly. I just think there’s a better way to do it.

I think the underlying tone that I got from both of these guys is that, “Oh yeah, we’re kind of, we’re kicking ass. We’re a-

Jill DeWit:                            Cocky-

Jack Butala:                   … “We got this scam.” They never said scam. “We’ve got this system going where we’ve got it all figured out. We provide these IT consulting products. We know, going in, every answer to everything and we stretch it out as far as we can.” It’s-

Jill DeWit:                            With an attitude-

Jack Butala:                   Yeah

Jill DeWit:                            … They were kind of cocky about it. I do not like that.

Jack Butala:                   I think … I know, neither do I. I really think we could charge 2 to 3 times what we charge.

Jill DeWit:                            I know.

Jack Butala:                   I’ve had people say that.

Jill DeWit:                            I [inaudible 06:45] have that thought too.

Jack Butala:                   I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that.

Jill DeWit:                            I know.

Jack Butala:                   Here’s another example. This show does very well, okay. We have plans to monetize it. We have plans at some point, not in a near future at all, to retain advertisers that are pertinent to what we do. Maybe data companies. Maybe printing companies. Maybe … You know, companies that we … That are pertinent to our listening audience. Not this … We’re not going to sell Pepsi or anything like that. There’s a huge reward for that financially. Huge one, from big companies. Is that unethical? That’s the most … Then now we’re giving away a bunch of free stuff to people, to our members, and our listeners and we’re getting paid by advertisers to do it.

Now that is a great set up. There is zero unet… That’s the most ethical thing I’ve ever heard.

Jill DeWit:                            No, it’s transparent. It’s upfront.

Jack Butala:                   Right.

Jill DeWit:                            That’s the thing that gets to me. If you’re transparent and upfront about it, I’m cool. If you’re trying to be sneaky and pull one over, that does not sit with me at all. It’s so funny.

Jack Butala:                   Exactly.

Jill DeWit:                            … No, and it’s funny, these 2 guys, they were here for a golf trip. Weren’t they too? I think they were taking some time off.-

Jack Butala:                   I’m not sure.

Jill DeWit:                            … I don’t think they were here for work. I think it was just a golf, guys trip. Thinking back-

Jack Butala:                   Women can smell this stuff from a mile away.

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah, but no, not after you’ve had a couple of drinks.

Jack Butala:                   Really? That’s good to know, Jill.

Jill DeWit:                            I [inaudible 08:23]

Jack Butala:                   If you’re going to be dishonest with Jill, make sure she’s drinking, is what I got out of that.

Jill DeWit:                            Thanks a lot.

“Jill, have another glass of wine and then we’re going to talk about this.” No! That is why I turn my phone off and do things when we’re out like that.

Jack Butala:                   I know, me too.

Jill DeWit:                            You … We’ve been out and Steven will say, “Hey, why don’t you reply to that guy right now?” I’m like, ” I am not going to reply to that guy right now because I’ve been drinking. I don’t even want to … I don’t know what I’m going to say.” No, we’re not doing that. It’s Friday night, not happening. That’s so funny.

What else?

Jack Butala:                   Have you ever-

Jill DeWit:                            Did you-

Jack Butala:                   … Go ahead

Jill DeWit:                            … Go ahead

Jack Butala:                   Have you ever worked for somebody that just like, this guy’s a crook? I have.

Jill DeWit:                            You know, no. I have done my homework. We’re on the same page. I have never worked anywhere because I could never work anywhere that I didn’t 100% believe in them, the product, and what we were doing, all of that. I had one job once, when I was a kid, that was awful. It was cold calling and out of a phone book.

Jack Butala:                   Oh my gosh.

Jill DeWit:                            Selling things to doctors. I didn’t last a week. I couldn’t do it. It’s like it was unethical or anything. It was just dumb. I couldn’t do it.

Jack Butala:                   A lot of people think that’s what sales is and it’s not.

Jill DeWit:                            It’s not.

Jack Butala:                   That’s just … That’s like call center.-

Jill DeWit:                            It’s painful.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah, it was funny. I didn’t [inaudible 09:52]

Even all my years at American Airlines. I went to work with them because they were the biggest. They were the best. They had the pretty, shiniest plane. They were the on-time machine. They were very professional and real serious about what they were doing, safety, and their people. That’s why I went to work there. I wouldn’t go work anywhere … I wouldn’t work for a shady airline just because.

Jack Butala:                   We have some competitors, direct competitors that I think the advice that they’re giving. Well, I don’t think this. People that have used to be part of their organization-

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah

Jack Butala:                   Who are now a part of our organization, tell us what they say. I can’t believe they get away with the stuff that they say.-

Jill DeWit:                            Some of the stuff.

Jack Butala:                   … How they teach stuff. I wouldn’t be sleeping real well at night with that.

Jill DeWit:                            Well, you know, that’s a whole-

Jack Butala:                   I’m not going to name any names.

Jill DeWit:                            By the way, that’s a whole other thing that brings me down. Okay, so like these guys we met, that leaves us with a little bit of a bad taste in our mouth from people in that environment. That’s not cool. I am sure there are plenty of other IT consulting professionals who are genuine, good people. We met these 2 and now you’re like, “Oh, hi.”

Jack Butala:                   I will give you an example.

Jill DeWit:                            Thank you.

Jack Butala:                   I will give you a perfect example. It happened to me within 2 weeks. We are … There’s other companies, offshoots, of Land Academy that Jill and I are starting. It’s at the request of our members. They’re not different types of companies. They’re new products that are … People are calling us saying, “Boy, if you could take the data and do this with it, I’d really be interested.” When enough people say, call us, or email us and start requesting thing like that. Especially members, too, that are already with us and they say, “Hey, this would be easier if I had this.”

Jill DeWit:                            Right.

Jack Butala:                   Well, one of those things, not to get in to too much detail, is website driven. Okay, you go in there, you [inaudible 11:41] put a lot of information in a … I contacted a person that, through a lot of research, does websites just like this. Exactly what I want. In fact, I’m very confident they could put together something for us pretty quickly based on the fact that they have 2 or 3 other clients just like us. This guy, in an incredibly ethnic way. Ethnic? What the hell does that mean?

Jill DeWit:                            What the?

Jack Butala:                   Oh my god.

Jill DeWit:                            What?

Jack Butala:                   That’s worse than saying swear words.

Jill DeWit:                            Oh my gosh.

Jack Butala:                   Not ethnic.

Jill DeWit:                            Ethical.

Jack Butala:                   This guys not … Ethical.

Jill DeWit:                            Oh my gosh.

Jack Butala:                   This guy’s not even ethnic at all. I don’t even know what the heck.

Jill DeWit:                            In an extremely ethanol way.

Jack Butala:                   Ethanol … In an extreme alcohol way.

Jill DeWit:                            What the heck. That’s great. That’s so funny.

Jack Butala:                   In a very ethical way said, “Look man, I know what you’re up too. You’re trying to get … This took me 5 years to do this first 1, this and this and this. I’m going to talk to this guy. I’m going to talk to that guy. No, you’re not going to come in here and spend $2000 and get a $25,000 website.” I really appreciate that.

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah.

Jack Butala:                   I think it would have pissed a lot of people off. I really … When people are real … guys are real, straight-forward, upfront like that, it goes a long way.

Jill DeWit:                            That’s why I think we have are people we do.

Jack Butala:                   That’s what you just said, earlier. All a guy has to do is be upfront about it. This is like drinking a glass of water for me. It’s not for you. Let’s meet somewhere in the middle.

Jill DeWit:                            Yeah, totally.

Jack Butala:                   Right.

Jill DeWit:                            I am 100% on the same page. Well, like I was saying that’s I think, again, why people … Why we have our … The community that we have. You know?

Jack Butala:                   Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            That’s how we roll. I only wish I had more time to deal with everybody 1-on-1. That’s the only thing I wish I had more time to do.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah, that’s why we have Success Plant.

Jill DeWit:                            This is true.

Jack Butala:                   I really think … Now I’m starting to get stories from people who go to success plant and they get their free version of success plant. They’re out there asking questions. Then there’s certain people answering them. The original people, our customers, are coming back to us and saying, “Hey, if it wasn’t for this guy. This guy really helped me out in the beginning. I wasn’t into this at all.”

Jill DeWit:                            That’s good.

Jack Butala:                   I’m seeing that a lot lately.

Jill DeWit:                            That’s really good.

Jack Butala:                   We have 2 or 3 members who now get a lot of our stuff just for lickity-split free. It’s because they’re so seasoned. They’re so good at this that they, you know, they’re helping the newer people-

Jill DeWit:                            What?!

Jack Butala:                   … With us. You don’t know this?

Jill DeWit:                            Let’s talk about that. Anyway. Anyway.

Jack Butala:                   Hey, before I get in trouble, join us in another episode, where Jill and I discuss your all important success in land investment and in life.

Jill DeWit:                            That funny part … Oh my … I can’t believe you said that. That was really good.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            Like, “What the heck?”.

Jack Butala:                   I can’t believe it. You … It took you … You didn’t even … You were laughing immediately.

Jill DeWit:                            Oh, yeah.

Jack Butala:                   Before I could even correct myself.

Jill DeWit:                            Oh I yeah, I was good. What are you going to bleep it out?

Jack Butala:                   Maybe. Maybe this will be one I’ll put it in the trash can of episodes-

Jill DeWit:                            No

Jack Butala:                   … [crosstalk 15:08]

Jill DeWit:                            No, I like this show. It’s important to talk about people in the business world, in [inaudible 15:15] world, and in life. What kind of person are you? How do you associate with? I’ll tell you I’ve … If you’re up front and honest, I promise you’re going to get there faster. Stuff catches up with people. You don’t … You know, you can only walk around for so long-

Jack Butala:                   Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            …. Lying and telling stories before it catches up with you.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            You’re really … Then what have you done? You’ve just made a mess.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            You don’t want to do that.

Jack Butala:                   Yeah, on that note-

Jill DeWit:                            Those guys make a good story though.

Jack Butala:                   They were funny. You could tell they’re good salesmen. They were a lot of fun. They were funny.-

Jill DeWit:                            There’s so many things now-

Jack Butala:                   … Really smart too.

Jill DeWit:                            … Thinking aback too. They kind of divided and conquered too. Did you catch that?

Jack Butala:                   Yeah. Yeah.

Jill DeWit:                            They split off and talked to us individually. I’m like, “What is this about”?-

Jack Butala:                   I had-

Jill DeWit:                            … Are we like-

Jack Butala:                   … I had you in the corner of my eye the whole time.

Jill DeWit:                            Thank you. It was really a little weird.

Jack Butala:                   I got your 6, man.

Jill DeWit:                            I know you do. Thank you.

Jack Butala:                   Let’s go buy some property, Jill.
