Jack Butala:                            Jack Butala with Jill DeWitt

Jill DeWit:                               Good Morning!

Jack Butala:                            Welcome to our show today. This is the first time we’re doing this video

Jill DeWit:                               Exactly

Jack Butala:                            We’re gonna try it. We’ll see how great Jill looks and we’ll see how acceptable I look. For this episode Jill and I talk about New York City and how Jill took it on or … The city …

Jill DeWit:                               Took on Jill.

Jack Butala:                            Took Jill on, we’ll see. Before we get into it let’s take a question posted by one of our members on landacademy.com, let’s read.

Jill DeWit:                               Okay. David asked, “I just got off the phone with a seller who told me she tried to sell but couldn’t because when she bought it she had a bd survey done and wrong legal description. The county wasn’t helpful. Is there anything I can do?”

Jack Butala:                            Wow [crosstalk 00:00:47]

Jill DeWit:                               I’m really kinda confused by this …

Jack Butala:                            Me too

Jill DeWit:                               She thinks she can’t sell it, she tried to sell me the land but said she couldn’t because she had a bad survey done ad the wrong legal description. So I would help her find out where the property is.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah

Jill DeWit:                               Sadly, David, you probably … And I think I know which David this is …

Jack Butala:                            Me too

Jill DeWit:                               I’m sure you know more than she does about this.

Jack Butala:                            What this does is screams to me that if you got a bad survey then you probably can’t pay what you thought you could pay.

Jill DeWit:                               True

Jack Butala:                            So the first thing to do is figure it out, it’s really not gonna be that hard. Get the legal description and the APN. It’s funny that you bring this up cause we’re about to launch a product where you type … It’s very simple … Picture google, you would go to the site, type in State, County and APN, assessor’s parcel number and it will pull you right in to google earth with the outline. We got lucky with the truck behind us too. Perfect timing.

Jill DeWit:                               This is a awesome way to test these.

Jack Butala:                            We’re testing these … Yeah, perfect.

Jill DeWit:                               We have the Fox Sports News, down on the sidelines with crowd going crazy. It’s the same headsets basically, the same mics and everything. We’re clearly testing it.

Jack Butala:                            Other people who do a show, they have grips and boom mics and people involved and … It’s just us …

Jill DeWit:                               Yeah we don’t have that

Jack Butala:                            You’re stuck with us

Jill DeWit:                               I know!

Jack Butala:                            SO anyway we’re launching this project and it’s gonna be really easy. It’ll outline every single property in the country with very very exceptions.

Jill DeWit:                               It’s gonna be great. Do you have a name for it yet that we can sneak out?

Jack Butala:                            Parcel Fact … So far, it might be something else, might be Parcel Finder.

Jill DeWit:                               Ooh … It might evolve from that.

Jack Butala:                            We have several dot-coms that we’ve already purchased so I’m not sure.

Jill DeWit:                               [inaudible 00:02:25]

Jack Butala:                            You know what David? It’s the David we all think it is, it’s funny that you asked this question, and thank you for asking because you’re extremely intelligent and I’m sure that by the time we answer it and this airs you will have …

Jill DeWit:                               You will have already figured it out … And bought it. And maybe sold it!

Jack Butala:                            All kidding aside, locating property has been a challenge, it’s been a challenge for a lot of years and the product that we’re about to release solves it all. We’re real excited about it … Very inexpensive.

Jill DeWit:                               Just really interesting, when you hire a survey you usually go through the county and you’re really hiring professionals. Something about this property is tricky, that even the professionals couldn’t get it and I know that we can.

Jack Butala:                            I mean this is such an interesting situation from a real estate standpoint. It’s such an opportunity. You’ll find it. If it’s a legal description like the northeast corner or the southeast corner, you can back into it really simply. If it’s in a subdivision it’s a little more tricky but still, get the original plat map from the county.

Jill DeWit:                               Do it that way

Jack Butala:                            The county wasn’t helpful, that’s classic.

Jill DeWit:                               I’ve never experienced that, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Jack Butala:                            Usually counties are so helpful.

Jill DeWit:                               Oh exactly.

Jack Butala:                            Hey, if you have a question or you wanna be on the show, reach out to either one of us on landacademy.com. Jill tell us about New York, I can’t wait to hear your perceptions. I spent two years there, working, and I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Jill DeWit:                               You know Jack, I envisioned you … As I’m walking around … Seriously! I shared this with Jack, this is funny. Jack used to own a lot of suits

Jack Butala:                            I used to have only suits.

Jill DeWit:                               Exactly, when I met you, you still had them

Jack Butala:                            Yeah I guess

Jill DeWit:                               You did, you still had a closet full of unworn suits when I met you.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah, with dust on the shoulders.

Jill DeWit:                               I don’t think it was just a gradual disappearance of the suits too, I think it was one fell swoop you just said, “I’m done”.

Jack Butala:                            For me it was a revenue thing, when I hit a certain … I play these games with myself all the time. When I hit a certain revenue point … Consistent revenue, not just one time … Yeah I threw my suits away. I still play games with my … Do you play games with yourself like that? Like I’m gonna reward myself when XYZ happens.

Jill DeWit:                               I used to, I kinda stopped doing that.

Jack Butala:                            Cause you don’t need to.

Jill DeWit:                               I know, that’s exactly it. You know what’s really funny? Here’s the games I play with myself: Yes you can afford this right now but don’t do it, save that. There’s a few things that I’ve been eyeing that you know about that I’m like, wait til your birthday, wait for Christmas. Just because I could afford to go but it right now doesn’t mean I should. So those are the games I play with myself. I purposely make it special, like the watch I someday want, kinda thing.

Jack Butala:                            Right, so tell us about New York!

Jill DeWit:                               Okay so here’s my thing about New York … So the whole point with the suits, I could see you in that environment years ago, Jack. I could see you dressed up going from the office to dinner in your suit. This was my second trip to New York, everyone. The first time I was there was years ago, it was a trip with my brother and it was a quick little in and out fun event … Got to see the Rockettes … But anyway, that was it, that was my trip.

Jack Butala:                            So it was in the seventies then if you saw the Rockettes.

Jill DeWit:                               No! It was two thousand and …

Jack Butala:                            It doesn’t matter.

Jill DeWit:                               Shoot I don’t even remember now. So anyway my point is that was my only trip to New  … So this time I spent five days in New York. I got to see it all. I got to see New York in the winter cause it was 60 degrees one day … This is February … Or in the Spring I should say, 60, and the next day I got to see New York in the Winter cause the next day it snowed and it was just muck. We’re talking is was the 6-12 inches, they did get it, I did see that and I had really not been through that.

Jack Butala:                            Did they bring out the yellow iron so to speak? The caterpillars?

Jill DeWit:                               Oh yeah, all the street things

Jack Butala:                            Like they’re digging a hole but they’re really moving snow.

Jill DeWit:                               Oh and the salt and the all of that.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah, it’s a mess.

Jill DeWit:                               It was a dirty mess.

Jack Butala:                            Puts everybody in a real good mood too.

Jill DeWit:                               Oh my gosh. It was so interesting to me to be there and experience that. I noticed, the thing about New York is, sometimes there’s a … The people more really really fast, but they’re not as efficient.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah, I’m playing with the camera.

Jill DeWit:                               Okay, god, I’m like, what’s happening right now. I have a couple of perceptions of New York. Number one is you see a lot of hustle and bustle and fast and everywhere and everything but what you and I get done in the course of one day and what they’re getting done in the course of one day … cause I met a lot of people there for … I was there for New York Fashion Week, the beginning of it, supporting my friend who’s a designer, had so much fun. But there’s not a lot that really gets done and I met some people that … I thought they were gonna be brilliant and I walked away going, wow we’re smart.

I mean I talked to people in all kind of industries, stuff that has nothing … Actually I talked to no other person in real estate in any way which is really interesting, no investors. There were Wall Street people and there were design people and people with other kinds of apps and things that they’re promoting and I … Every person I talked to, I’s give them ideas, and I walked away going, wow we’re smart. It’s really interesting to me, that’s what I thought. The final thing that I noticed … But this is our group too by the way … Our people in our world, we’re pretty smart.

Jack Butala:                            I agree

Jill DeWit:                               What we’re taking on and what we’re accomplishing and the deals that we’re finding and what we’re buying and what we’re selling …

Jack Butala:                            How much stuff we get done in a given week.

Jill DeWit:                               Volume, and you especially.

Jack Butala:                            How many properties get sold.

Jill DeWit:                               Okay I’m gonna ask that in a minute, what you got done this week. My final thing on New York is: The real estate there? Not so crazy. Coming from here, coming from …

Jack Butala:                            I’m so proud of you by the way.

Jill DeWit:                               Southern California.

Jack Butala:                            I thought you were gonna come back and just be mystified.

Jill DeWit:                               Oh really?

Jack Butala:                            Yeah! A lot of people go to New York and they just get mesmerized and sucked in and I think it’s so …

Jill DeWit:                               I had a really healthy good dose. I’ll share this, I stayed … I split my time between the Waldorf Astoria …

Jack Butala:                            Oh ow that hurts.

Jill DeWit:                               I know … Between the Waldorf Astoria and a friend’s apartment which was really cool. So I got to see it all, went from here to here … It’s not like we were roughing it in the apartment by the way, it was in Tudor City so it’s a great area and it was really cool to see that. The real estate there … I laid in bed one night and I was … So I’m laying in bed, looking at real estate prices. I dropped a pin and I’m looking around at all the available apartment space around where I was and where I’d wanna be, near Central Park. It didn’t shock me like I thought it would.

Jack Butala:                            What’s a two bedroom there?

Jill DeWit:                               You could get a … three to five thousand

Jack Butala:                            Wow

Jill DeWit:                               Seriously

Jack Butala:                            That actually surprises me how little that is.

Jill DeWit:                               Yeah, I was like, that’s really not crazy. You could do that.

Jack Butala:                            You cannot get a two bedroom here that’s worth anything for three yeah

Jill DeWit:                               Yeah we’re spending three thousand. Here in this market is what it runs and it goes up. So I just thought that that was super interesting. Do you have anymore questions about me before I ask you about your week?

Jack Butala:                            No.

Jill DeWit:                               All right so I wanna ask you Jack about what did you get done while I was away? Cause this is good.

Jack Butala:                            Oh my gosh

Jill DeWit:                               Tell me

Jack Butala:                            The last time you went away like that … with the same person actually. I designed and launched SuccessPlant.com

Jill DeWit:                               Which is great, which is our online community.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah it’s our online community, it’s been proven to be an incredibly tool. It’s completely free. A really helpful tool for our members, and for everybody! Anybody who’s in land business. Anybody.

Jill DeWit:                               Yup, get in there, ask a question.

Jack Butala:                            So I have a full IT staff now so we’re launching a … Oh where do I start … Land Pin itself will overtake Land Watch and Land and Farm probably within 18 months. So we’re working on that to make the functionality better and the maps. Then we’re launching BackTaxForum.com which will take over BackTaxLists.

Jill DeWit:                               These are all tongue ties.

Jack Butala:                            It’s just all IT, not to mention we’re subdividing a big piece of property in Texas to create a bunch of little pieces of property to sell on Land Pin.

Jill DeWit:                               Got it, so you were very very very busy. That’s how it goes.

Jack Butala:                            My sleep patterns are messed up, we worked so much. I got a good group of guys working with me … We don’t even look at the clock. I ate 400 frozen burritos in the last 4 days.

Jill DeWit:                               Oh no! I did ask you that, “What’ve you been eating?” He’s like, “Burritos”. That’s so funny. When I’m away you’re killing it. I’m excited to see these products you got coming up, this is gonna be good, and there’s more. I know we have a show this week about one of the products that … And we’ll go into great detail about that … The one that you created for me while I was away, I didn’t have to be here and you’re doing stuff for me, thank you.

Jack Butala:                            You’ve heard of Pat Live, you know the phone answering service? Well we created Jill Live, literally, JillLive.com.

Jill DeWit:                               It’s gonna be great.

Jack Butala:                            It’s all happening. If you listen to the show, first of all that’s your problem, we’ll be rolling those out and talking about them the whole time.

Jill DeWit:                               I love it. Hey I wanna add a little thing before we close. For our regular listeners who don’t know what we’re doing right now, we’ve done a little different in the background everything … It’s because we’re outside and we’re out here in South Bay at a pier, in Los Angeles, recording live … We’re doing video cause we’re gonna do some video stuff with these shows. Check it out. You can still hear us your regular way, that’s probably how you’re catching it but now go check out the video, it might be kinda fun to see where we are.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah, exactly. Jill came back from New York … This is why it happened … Jill came back from New York an she said , “It’s awful there. The weather’s awful and people just throw stuff in the street when they’re done with it. Why don’t we do the show outside in California cause it’s beautiful and everybody’s happy?” And I said, “You just read my mind”. We slapped it all together that’s why it looks this way. Join us in another episode where Jack and Jill discuss how to use information, that’s me.

Jill DeWit:                               And inspiration, that’s me.

Jack Butala:                            To get just about anything you want.

Jill DeWit:                               We use it everyday to buy property for half of what it’s worth and sell it immediately.

Jack Butala:                            You are not alone in your real estate ambition.

Jill DeWit:                               I’m so glad that truck is gone but now I hear something, I don’t know. It’ll be interesting.

Jack Butala:                            It’s just outside stuff.

Jill DeWit:                               Yeah, there’s a whale watching boat going out right there

Jack Butala:                            That’s why we have these NFL down on the field headsets.

Jill DeWit:                               Exactly, if it can handle Superbowl noise, it can handle all of this noise.

Jack Butala:                            That’s right, that’s what I think.

Jill DeWit:                               Exactly, good show.

Jack Butala:                            Yeah! Information and inspiration to buy undervalued property.
