By now, you’ve probably heard of the 5 Love Languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch.  

My Love Language is “physical touch”, and Jack’s is “acts of service”. I know it means a lot to him when someone does something for him and he knows that I prefer a good foot rub. The point is to recognize your partner’s love language instead of your own so that you can meet each other’s needs.  

But I recently realized that we each have our own Land Love Language, too.  

What do I mean by that? Well… there are deals that I like to do and there are deals that Jack likes to do. There are deals that both of us hate to do! It’s not necessarily; the deal itself or where the property is located, or even how much money we are spending, it’s all about the transaction itself.  

For example, I like to sell fast. That’s my Land Love Language. This is not the case for Jack. He prefers to take time to maximize the profit, and this is not natural for me. I want to sell in 5 minutes, put the money in the bank and move on. He prefers quality while I prefer quantity.  

Wondering where I’m going with this? My point is, are you and your partner on the same page? Are they good at doing the things you aren’t? Do you listen to each other and consider their opinions? Do you trust them? Do you balance each other?  

This is critical in your land business. A negative relationship with your partner will destroy your business. Take the time to really understand each other and your expectations, you have to compromise and develop a strong business plan that you can follow when emotions are involved and you likely aren’t thinking clear. Discuss and agree on specific criteria for buying and selling before you begin buying and selling.  

Everything will not always run smoothly, and some transactions do not go as planned. If you do find that you and your business partner are not on the same page, it’s time to reset.
